================================================= Zip Search Deluxe (ZSD) Installation Instructions ================================================= Thank you for trying Zip Search Deluxe (ZSD)! This software will run on Windows 98/NT/2000/XP platforms only! ------------------------- Downloading the Software: ------------------------- To run the program, you need to download the Zip Search Deluxe SOFTWARE and a DATA FILE to run with it. Do the following steps to download the software: 1) We recommend that you FIRST create a directory (folder) on your computer called 'C:\ZSD'. This will be where all Zip Search Deluxe files should be located. 2) Next, click on the link from our Download Page for Zip Search Deluxe and download it into 'C:\ZSD'. This is a large file (about 10 MB) and may take a long time if you don't have a high-speed connection (ISDN, DSL, T-1, etc.) -------------------------- Downloading the Data File: -------------------------- From the Download Page, you can also download the data needed to be used with the Software. ZSD will work with our U.S. Pro-Zipcode / Pro-Zipcode Deluxe data and our Canadian Postal Codes product. If you have purchased a data product from us, download that file. If you just want to try a DEMO of Zip Search Deluxe, we recommend that you download the Pro-Zipcode DEMO database for the U.S., or Canadian Postal Codes for Canada. We strongly recommend that you install the Extractor in the default folder of C:\Pro-Zip. Note: all further instructions will assume that you have installed the Extractor in C:\Pro-Zip. ------------------------- Extracting the Data File: ------------------------- If you downloaded the data by choosing the Run or Open options in your Internet Browser, the Extractor program should automatically run after it's downloaded. Otherwise, IF YOU SAVED THE FILE TO DISK, remember what folder the .exe file was downloaded to, then do the following: -- From the Windows (or NT) Explorer, open up the folder where the file was saved, then double-click on the database self-extracting file (it should be named either pz-demo.exe, pzd-demo.exe, can-demo for the Demo version.) This will extract the database and run our Extractor program, "pzewin.exe". The Extractor should now be running. If you have purchased a file and are extracting the Full Version, follow the instructions which were e-mailed to you for extracting the file with the add-ons purchased. If you are just evaluating the data, we recommend that you choose the following add-on products: -- Latitude & Longitude (this will allow you to do a radius search [find all . of the zip codes within a selected radius]). -- Area Codes. -- MSA Codes (for the U.S. only). When you extract the data, it will default to extract the data into the same folder which the Extractor is in (normally C:\Pro-Zip). The Extractor will also default to naming the file with a '.ful' suffix. Keep that default as well. ------------------------ Installing the Software: ------------------------ Note: if you have Zip Search Deluxe already installed on this system, make sure you uninstall the old version by going into the Control Panel, Choose Add/Remove Programs, select Zip Search Deluxe from the list, then Click on the Add/Remove button. 1) If you're installing this on a Windows NT network, even if you are just installing this on your local ('C') hard drive, but are connected to an NT network, you must be logged in with ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES. If you don't have this, your network administrator must install the software. 2) Close any applications that are currently running (other than Explorer). 3) Use the Windows (or NT) Explorer to view the 'C:\ZSD' folder. It should have the 'zsdsetup.exe' file in it. Double-click on the file. This will begin the installation. 4) This will load in the InstallShield software and display a welcom message. Click on [Next] to continue. It will now begin installing. 5) It will ask you to enter your name & organization name. Do so, and click on the [Next] button. 6) The program will display the default directory to install the program in. Make sure that it is set to 'C:\ZSD'. Keep this and click on the [Next] button. 7) It will now ask you if you want to add the icons to the Zip Search Deluxe folder. Just click on the [Next] button. 8) Now it will display all of the options you have chosen. Click on the [Next] button to finish the installation. 9) The program should now be installed. The installer may notify you that you need to first restart your computer before you can run Zip Search Deluxe. If so, restart the computer and run Zip Search Deluxe from the Start Menu, Programs section. Otherwise, check the box to launch the program after the installation and then click on the [Finish] button. This will bring up Zip Search Deluxe. --------------------- Running the Software: --------------------- If Zip Search Deluxe is not already running, you can bring it up from the Start Menu, then choose the Programs option (Zip Search Deluxe will probably be the last menu option). Now do the following: 1) This will ask you for the password to load in the Full Version files. If you are running just the demo, click on 'No' to continue. If you have purchased the product and have the password, answer 'Yes' and then enter the password. After you put in the correct password once, the program will not prompt again for the password. By entering the password, you convert the program into a Full Version of Zip Search Deluxe which can read any of our full or demo data files. 2) The first time you run ZSD, there is an empty database. You will be prompted to load in one of the files (only demo files can be loaded if you have the demo version). Click on the [OK] button to get to the Data Loader screen. If no files are listed on the left side, and the folder on the right side is not 'C:\Pro-Zip', open up the 'C:\Pro-Zip' folder by double-clicking on the 'C:\' folder and then scroll down to and open up the 'C:\Pro-Zip' folder. The available files will appear on the left side. 3) On the left side, double-click on the file name to load. If you extracted the Pro-Zipcode with Latitude & Longitude, Area Codes and FIPS Codes DEMO, the file will be called, 'pzlam.dem'. The program will warn you when it is loading and will inform you when it is done. It will also automatically compact the database for you. ---------------------------------- Basic Tutorial with the U.S. Data: ---------------------------------- We will assume that you have downloaded one of the Pro-Zipcode demos and that this has been loaded into the system. Any of the U.S. demo files will work with this tutorial. 1) The first field you see is the 'Where' field. You will normally see just at least the following options: 'zip, city, county'. If you have loaded a file with the Area Codes or MSA codes, you will have options for those as well. Choose 'County' by clicking on it. 2) The next field has 'begins with' as the default. Choose the option for 'is equal to'. 3) Click on the field next to 'is equal to' and type in 'Plymouth'. 4) Click on the 'Limit to State' field and type in 'MA' for Massachussetts. You can also click on the down arrow (which is called a 'combo-box') next to it and select the state name. 5) Finally, click on the 'Search Now' button. This will give you a list of all of the zip codes in Plymouth County, Massachussetts sorted in the default sequence of Zip, State, City. 6) Let's choose to sort the list by the city name, within the state. Click on the down arrow (combo-box) next to the Sort Sequence field and choose 'State, City, Zip'. 7) You will notice that the 'Search Now' button will always have a red box around it whenever you have changed an option. This lets you know that the list you are seeing on the screen no longer corresponds to the options above it. Click on 'Search Now' and it will re-display the list, sorted the way you chose. Always click on 'Search Now' after entering new options. 8) Next to field with 'Plymouth' in it, click on the 'Add to List' Button. This will put 'Plymouth' in the Multiple Selection List field. 9) Next, click on the combo-box button next to the field that previously had 'Plymouth' in it. It will display a list of all counties in Massachusetts (note: if you change the state field, it will give you the counties in that state). Select 'Suffolk' from the list by double-clicking on it. 10) When you now click on 'Search Now', you will see Suffolk county records added to the list and 'Suffolk' will now be in the Multiple Selection List. 11) There are buttons for 'Remove from List' and 'Clear List' which you can use to fine-tune the list that you have. Also, you can select the 'Ignore List' option which, after you choose 'Search Now', would give you all of the records in Massachusetts, ignoring the counties in the list. 12) Click on the 'Reference List' button. Since 'MA' is still the selected state, it will give you all references to Massachusetts. For instance, if 'County' is selected, it shows all of the counties. If 'City', then it will show all of the cities in Massachusetts. The Zip option will show all of the 3-digit zip codes, the Area will show the area codes and the MSA option will show the MSA Codes and their descriptions. 13) You can also click on items in the 'Other Reference Lists' sections in order to view the MSA/CMSA-PMSA info. in various ways. This is very helpful if you are wanting to do searches by MSA code because you can choose the MSA by name if you don't know the number and you can see all of the PMSAs in a CMSA. 14) Select City. Type in 'Bos' in the 'Search Text' box and click on the 'Find First' button. This will find Boston in the list. Double-click on 'Boston' and it will close the Reference List and show you the main page with all of the options selected to find the Boston records. Click 'Search Now' to view the records. 15) At this point, you could click on the 'Print' or 'Export' buttons to print a list or to export the files to a comma-delimited file (which can be loaded into Excel, Access, etc.) 16) You can now try out other sort / select options to understand the program further. ------------------------------------ Advanced Tutorial (Radius Searches): ------------------------------------ If you're looking to find all of the zip codes within a radius of another zip code, you need to load in one of our files with latitude and longitude. 1) If you don't have a file with latitude and longitude loaded, you can extract a demo file as stated above, then from within Zip Search Deluxe, click on the [Load] button to load the file in. If you don't see any files in the files list, make sure you are looking in the 'C:\Pro-Zip' folder. Double click on the file name in the left column and it will start to load the file. 2) If needed, bring up all of the zip codes for Plymouth County, Mass. again. 3) Enter 02301 in the Find Listed Zip box, then press [Enter]. The program will find that zip code. The '02301' row should now be highlighted and have an arrow beside it. This indicates that it is the 'Anchor Zip'. 4) Click on the Distance button. The Distance Calculation window will now appear. 02301 is going to be the anchor point that you will calculate the distances from. Change the range limit to be from 0 to 25 miles and click on the 'Search & Display' button. 5) You will now see the 'Confirm Distance Search' window which will tell you how many records will be searched (since we are viewing just Plymouth County, you will only be selecting from that group of records.) 6) Answer [Yes] to the question. It will now show you the records found as a subset of the main (Plymouth County) list. The list defaults to sort from the Nearest to Farthest records. You can sort this list differently by changing the options in the Distance Sort Options. 8) After the list looks just like you want it, you can print or export this list by choosing those buttons, or you can press the [Reset] button to get back to the main list. 9) There are other things you can do with the distance calculation. For more detailed instructions, you can click on the Instructions button from within the Distance Calculation window. We have tried to make the interface as easy as possible to use. Please try different functions and options to familiarize yourself with the many features. Note: the 'X' buttons which appear next to the State field and the previous field (when there is something entered in these fields) are just to quickly clear out the data already entered in them. We hope you enjoy Zip Search Deluxe! -------------------------- Running ZSD from the Menu: -------------------------- To run Zip Search Deluxe from the menu, do the following: 1) Select the [Start] button. 2) Select the 'Programs' menu option. 3) Select the 'Zip Search Deluxe' menu option (this should be at the end of the menu options). -------------------------- To Uninstall the Software: -------------------------- If you ever want to unistall the program, you can do this by selecting the [Start] button, then choose the 'Settings' option followed by the 'Control Panel'. When the Control Panel Comes up, select the 'Add/Remove Programs' button and highlite the 'Zip Search Deluxe' program entry and press the 'Add/Remove' button. Next, use the Explorer to delete the directory (folder) where you installed ZSD (normally 'C:\ZSD') and any files that may be left in it. ============================================================================= Thanks for using our product!
